Ontario Reign Fall in Shootout; Lose AHL Debut

ONTARIO, CA — History was made on Friday night as Citizens Business Bank Arena played host to its first AHL game. Unfortunately, the debut was spoiled as the hometown Ontario Reign lost 3-2 in a shootout to the San Diego Gulls.

Prior to this season, the Reign were a member of the ECHL, but the affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings switched leagues with the club’s other affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs.

Despite the loss — especially against the affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks — the Reign put on quite a show to open their preseason schedule. Alex Roach and Valentin Zykov each scored for the home team while Michael Houser stopped 25 of 27 shots in the Ontario goal.

In related news, netminder Peter Budaj, who was invited to Kings training camp on a professional tryout, has been assigned to Ontario’s camp — albeit still without a contract.
